2008 CILT International AFRICA Forum

The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILTSA) South Africa hosted the Annual Meeting and Conference of the CILT Africa Forum in Johannesburg, South Africa from the 19th to 22nd February, 2008.

The event brought together logistics and transport professionals from all over Africa to share their experiences in the logistics and transport industry.

The Forum discussed many issues facing the different CILT sections throughout Africa. The future of CILT in Africa was examined. Dr David Maunder, Director of Professional Development for CILT International, maintained that “African sections are now sustainable and good transport systems will enable all countries to grow their economies.” Cyril Bleasdale, President of CILT International, concluded that CILT International is very pleased with the achievements in Africa.

The event proved to be a great success and networking opportunity for the different CILT countries.
The African countries were given an opportunity to discuss their difficulties, successes and challenges, which provided an extensive platform to learn and grow.

PROGRESS REPORTS

NIGERIA

· Committees have been formed and are working actively.
· Membership is improving
· Recently started to offer courses in Transport and Logistics which has proved to be a great success.
· There has been an increase in Organisational membership.
· Branches throughout Nigeria have organised a number of seminars and workshops in transport and logistics.

TANZANIA

· The executive committee was elected in September 2007.
· Industrial Events have been created to create awareness.
· Membership has increased by 20%.
· Training Programs have been instituted.

GHANA

· National and executive committees have been established to help activate the branches.
· There are now 250 members.
· Conferences have been organised and planned for this year.
· 6th Africa International Transport Conference is taking place in Ghana providing recognition to CILT Ghana.

MALAWI

· 142 Members
· Financial difficulties have been experienced but learnerships have started
· Outstanding applications have been a problem.
· Student Membership has grown immensely.

ZAMBIA

· National executive committee has been established.
· There are over 200 members and 4 corporate members.
· CILT Training programs are growing.
· Workshops and seminars have been planned.

KENYA

· CILT Kenya opened in 2005.
· There are 2 colleges offering CILT accredited programs.
· The minister of Transport in Kenya has become a fellow member providing a lot of opportunities.
· Membership has increased to 97 members..

SEYCHELLES

· CILT Seychelles opened in June 2005.
· There are 25 members.
· They are in the process of finalizing their constitution.
· Corporate Membership is growing.

SOUTH AFRICA

· CILTSA has endorsed a number of events including the SATC.
· The Air Cargo Conference proved to be a huge success.
· CILTSA events are hosted every 2 months to create awareness and to address issues in the transport and logistics fields.
· Training programs are planned to start this year.
· Membership has increased.
· Corporate membership has increased tremendously.
